Coupvray, France, the birthplace of Louis Braille.

Coupvray is a small village about 26 miles east of Paris. When Louis Braille was born in 1809, about 600 people lived in the village. The stagecoach ride from Louis’ Coupvray home to his boarding school in Paris took four hours.

Today more than 2,700 people live in Coupvray. Disneyland Resort Paris is nearby, and some Disney visitors seek lodging in Coupvray hotels.

Louis Braille’s boyhood home remains much as it was in the 1800’s. The interior is now a museum devoted to Louis Braille's life and times.

The Coupvray pictures on our site were taken by Jane Phillips and belong to the Louis Braille Online Resource.

We invite others to share their favorite braille-related images.
